A deeply sweet peaberry with a warm finish like pu’erh.

“Peaberries are one of my favorite kinds of coffee in the world. In fact, a Kenyan peaberry was the first roast profile I ever designed, which makes me extremely excited to present one through Smooth Coffee Co.

Considered a defect by some coffee brewing cultures, peaberries are the result of a genetic mutation that occurs in some 10-15% of all coffees in the world. It causes only one of the usual 2 seeds inside a coffee cherry to germinate, resulting in a solitary, oblong seed.

Certain regions around the world are more prone to generating peaberries than others, Kenya being one of them, to the point that the peaberries can be separated from non-peaberry coffees and sold as their own products.

This particular offering is a deeply sweet with a rich, earthy, aged tea-like finish somewhere in the world of Pu’Erh. The coffee is coming to us from the Gakundu Coffee Factory, a centralized mill located on the border of Mount Kenya and operated by the Gakundu Farmers’ Cooperative Society. This co-op currently has around 1260 smallholder member-farmers who, on average, own between one-third and one-half an acre of farm land.

This coffee is undoubtedly exceptional, and carries a lot of personal meaning for me. I hope you enjoy.

With love,

Noah
