“Brazil is the undoubted cornerstone of the coffee world. The quality of its yearly harvest dictates and influences the price of the commodity market for coffee more than any other, which in turn dictates the price of all coffees produced in the world. At the time of writing, coffee is the most expensive it has ever been due in large part to a poor projected harvest in Brazil, impacted by both blight and frost.
Despite this, coffee shops and roasteries all over the world maintain their composure, produce exceptional roasts, and sell great coffee. Despite the grand commoditization of coffee across the “New World”, coffee continues to prove to be a cornerstone of culture and community, and modern specialty coffee continues to grow as a greater representation of the roasted coffee market because, at its core, good coffee is an artisanal, delicious beverage that is highly desired.
Good coffee starts with good producers, and the Carvalho family of Fazenda Cachoeira de Grama are among the best in Brazil. The farm is located in the Vale de Grama, considered one of the premier coffee growing regions in the country, and the Carvalho family has taken their success as an opportunity to invest in their community. Through the success of their 75 year old Yellow Bourbon and Catuai trees they take their profits and fund a school on the property which is free to use by all of the farmers’ families, supporting nearly 300 children.
This is a program I am proud to represent and whose coffee I’m grateful to have the opportunity to roast. Not only is it a peaberry, which I always am ready to buy sight unseen, but this coffee checks all of my boxes for quality, community, and care. Being a peaberry this coffee is great for taking a tad darker, making it both a great single origin for those looking for a less sweet offering and a great component to blend for our NEAT label. I hope you enjoy.
With love,
Noah
